  • As your baby progresses, the Special Care Nursery team will discuss with you a time frame for going home. Nursery staff will complete your Child Health Record Book and confirm follow up care for when you are home. A follow up paediatric appointment will be arranged along with any other specialist appointments.

Rooming in (staying with your baby) is encouraged in most cases to allow parents the opportunity of full time care of their baby before going home. Staff are close by to assist and advise parents if required. Breakfast will be ordered for parents; all other meals can be brought in or purchased from the cafeteria. On the day of discharge you will need to bring in nappies, blankets and clothing that is appropriate for your baby and the time of year (ie, hats, booties and thicker blankets if the weather is cool). A pram is advised for transporting your baby from the nursery to your car. Discharge time is 10am.

We now have 2 parent rooms available for parents to room in prior to their discharge. These rooms still comply with hospital visiting policy.

Please ensure your car seat/capsule is fitted correctly well in advance.

Once home it may be necessary for the nursery team to follow you and your baby’s progress before the Maternal and Child Health Nurse can visit. You and your baby may be required to visit the Special Care Nursery in the interim or the nursery staff may visit you both at home. This will happen in the first week after your baby’s discharge from hospital. Times and details will be provided to you on the day of discharge.
