• Lymphoedema is the long term swelling of one or more parts of the body due to the lymphatic system not working effectively. Swelling usually occurs in the arms or legs; however, it may also affect other parts of the body.

  • Primary lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system is not fully developed at birth. Swelling may be present from birth or become apparent at puberty, pregnancy or even later in life.

  • Secondary lymphoedema occurs following damage to the lymphatic system. This may occur after cancer surgery and treatment, injury or infection. Radiotherapy may also cause damage to the lymphatic system. Lymphoedema can appear early following treatment or after many years.
