Shared Maternity Care is a model of care in which a woman is cared for by hospital staff and community based Shared Maternity Care Affiliates; a general practitioner (GP), obstetrician or community based midwife throughout her pregnancy.

The baby’s birth and immediate postnatal care are managed by the hospital. Shared Maternity Care aims to provide a high quality community based, holistic, safe and culturally appropriate model of care for women.

    Guidelines for Shared Maternity Care Affiliates                      

  • The Guidelines for Shared Maternity Care Affiliates (SMCAs) provide SMCAs with concise, up-to-date guidelines on the provision of Shared Maternity Care at Mercy Hospital for Women, The Royal Women's Hospital, Northern Health and Sunshine Hospital. They include information on antenatal care and hospital and community supports for women and health care providers.

    Guidelines for Share​d Maternity Care Affiliates and the Guidelines for Shared Maternity Care Affiliates – Resource Library were developed by the Shared Maternity Care Collaborative (GP Liaison Units at Mercy Hospital for Women, The Royal Women's Hospital, Northern Health and Sunshine Hospital ) in association with SMCAs , the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and General Practice Victoria.                     

  • At these hospitals, Shared Maternity Care is a major model of care in which a woman is cared for by both hospital staff and a community-based credentialed GP or Midwife. The woman attends the hospital for the birth and her immediate postnatal care. Shared Maternity Care aims to provide a community-based, holistic, safe and culturally appropriate model of care for women, which offers continuity and convenience

  • GPs and Obstetricians wishing to apply for accreditation as a Shared Maternity Care Affiliate for 2017-2019 – Download the application form.                     

    Successful applicants will be accredited as Shared Maternity Care Affiliates at Mercy Hospital for Women, The Royal Women’s Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and The Northern Hospital.
