The perinatal mental health program is located at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg and provides an inpatient and outpatient consultation service for mental health assessments through multiple stages: pre-conception, in pregnancy, in the post-partum period and also for women attending gynae-oncology service.
Specific liaison services are provided to the perinatal medicine, transitions, young mums and Nangok Baban Murrup antenatal clinic. These include access to clinical psychology and psychiatry. We also consult to paediatrics and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The perinatal mental health program provides teaching to medical students on rotation at St Vincent's Hospital, psychiatry registrars and placement for clinical psychology students. We provide professional development in perinatal mental health for midwives, GP's and obstetricians. We have also developed resources for health professionals in perinatal mental health.
The perinatal mental health program actively conducts research to better understand mental health across the perinatal periods. Our current research project is the Mercy Pregnancy Emotional Wellbeing Study (MPEWS).
