Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

Pausing to remember babies lost

Every year, Mercy Health marks International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day by remembering the lives of babies lost, both before and after birth.

Sadly, three in every 1,000 babies born each year in Australia die before they reach 12 months of age. In addition to this, six babies are stillborn every day and one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage.

International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day (15 October) recognises the profound sadness of losing a baby and its impact on families, often for the rest of their lives.

Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg, invites families to attend a short reflection service and candle-lighting in the multifaith chapel from 2–3pm on Sunday 15 October. Anyone affected by the loss of a baby is warmly invited to attend the service.

At Werribee Mercy Hospital, those who have experienced the loss of a baby are encouraged to light an electric candle and write a card which will be displayed on memory boards in the hospital and multifaith chapel to honour their child.

If you or a family member need support following the loss of a baby, please contact Sands Australia’s 24-hour helpline on 1300 072 637.
