A history of putting care first

A heritage wall which showcases the proud history of both Mercy Health and the work of the Sisters of Mercy dating back to 1827 in Dublin has been unveiled today in the foyer of the Heidelberg (Vic.) based public hospital, Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW).

Located within the level one MHW entrance foyer, the wall, unveiled by Mercy Health Chair Virginia Bourke and Group Chief Executive Officer Angela Nolan, is an impressive visual and cultural installation, which provides an insight to the mission and values of Mercy Health and to the person-centred approach to caring for those in need.

Renowned Victorian artist Chris Bond has created the display, designing 24 individual wings.

Each wing tells a part of the Mercy Health history – the opening wing dates back to when Catherine McAuley, Founder of the Sisters of Mercy, opened the House of Mercy, in Dublin in 1827.

The wings extend to the present day and the story of Mercy Health as a leading Catholic provider of health, aged care and community services.

Mercy Health Chair Virginia Bourke says the enduring legacy of the Sisters of Mercy is honoured in the modern story of Mercy Health.

“Our staff continue Catherine’s legacy with the same courage, leadership and compassion shown by the founding sisters who housed and educated poor and impoverished women and children in Ireland all those years ago,” says Ms Bourke.

“Whether it is in the hospital, at home, in our aged care homes or in the community, our staff continue to be guided by our values of compassion, hospitality, respect, innovation, stewardship and teamwork in the care they provide.”

Mercy Health Group Chief Executive Office Angela Nolan says the heritage wall also tells the story of Mercy Health’s growth across its health, aged care and community services.

“Mercy Health has always listened to and cared for the needs of the community. Over the years, we have evolved and adapted our services to meet the changing needs of society,” says Ms Nolan.

“Today, Mercy Health maintains a strong commitment to providing the highest quality of care to everyone we serve at every stage of life.”
