The Mercy Health staff recognised in 26 January Honours List 2024

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of two incredible Mercy Health people recognised in the 26 January Honours List 2024.

The late Dr Peter John Maher was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the General Division for his distinguished service to gynaecological medicine, to medical research and education, and to professional societies.

Commencing with Mercy Health at Mercy Maternity Hospital (East Melbourne) as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar in 1975, over 40 years, Dr Maher went on to hold significant roles at Mercy Maternity Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW). Dr Maher was the Department Head and Founding Director of the MHW Endosurgery Unit from 1993-2019, and Associate Professor Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1994-2011.

During his career, Dr Maher was also an author and co-author of more than 120 publications and lectured in 26 different countries on minimally invasive surgery in gynaecological practice. In addition, Dr Maher held positions as President of the International Society for Gynaecologic Endoscopy, the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society and Fertility Society of Australia.

Also recognised in this year’s honours, was Mr Eris Daniel Gleeson. A Young NSW local, Mr Gleeson was acknowledged with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for his service to the community of the Hilltops region.

Mr Gleeson is a valued member of the Mercy Health community in Young, serving as Deputy Chairman of Mercy Care Centre Young, from 1992-1993, and chairing the Advisory Board since 2000.

In addition to his roles at Mercy Health, Mr Gleeson has made an immense contribution to his local community. Mr Gleeson has been a Member of the Young Neighbourhood Centre since 1986 and a Foundation Member and Chair of Hilltops Suicide Prevention Network since 2007.

We recognise the immense contribution of both recipients to Mercy Health and their dedication to living the Mercy mission of delivering compassionate care to those in need.
