Mercy Place Dandenong marks Harmony Day with community celebration

Mercy Place Dandenong came alive with colour, music and celebration on 18 March, as residents, staff, families and students gathered to mark Harmony Day.

Dressed in traditional cultural attire, participants paraded through the aged care home, breaking into songs and dances that reflected communities from around the world. Festooned with bright orange balloons, the celebration created a vibrant atmosphere that truly engaged all the senses.

In a packed four‑hour program, residents and students from St Mary’s Primary School shared performances and migration stories, highlighting the rich cultural journeys within the Mercy Place community. A shared lunch added to the experience, featuring dishes inspired by Nepal, Mauritius, the United Kingdom, Russia, the Cook Islands, India and the Philippines.

Mercy Place Dandenong manager Sarabjit Kaur hosted the event, reinforcing the Harmony Day message that Everyone Belongs across cultures, generations and life experiences.

For many residents, the celebration was more than a festive occasion. It was a meaningful reminder of connection, inclusion and the value of coming together as a community.

The day concluded on a joyful note, with residents, children and staff joining together to sing We Are the World and Advance Australia Fair.

Harmony Day, celebrated nationally on 21 March, aligns with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and invites all Australians to celebrate cultural diversity, inclusion and respect. Across Mercy Health, we are proud to support environments where everyone feels seen, respected and included.
