A charity golf day has raised more than $39,000 to support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne. Jimmy’s Golf Day was established in November 2012 by Philip McGough as a way of giving back to Mercy Health after his wife Anne gave birth to their son Jimmy 17 weeks premature.
Jimmy spent nearly five months in the NICU at the Mercy Hospital for Women which gave Philip a real and unique insight into the challenges associated with having a baby born too early or sick.
Jimmy’s Golf Day has become something of a highlight for the hospital and the local community since its inception. “Jimmy’s” (as the event is now affectionately known), has grown organically thanks to the passion, care and interest of major sponsors, the Rosanna Golf Club and the broader Heidelberg/Rosanna community. Over the last four years an incredible $130,000 has been raised. The 5th Jimmy’s Golf Day raised more than $39,000, bringing the total fundraising amount to $169,000.
The funds raised will be used to provide emergency accommodation for families who have sick or premature babies in the nursery, and don’t qualify for government financial support. Last year the funds raised from Jimmy’s Golf Day paid for 77 nights of accommodation for 10 people at Lions ouse, and funded 30 milk bottle warmers for the NICU.
