Mercy Health CEO recognised amongst peers

Mercy Health Group Chief Executive Officer Stephen Cornelissen has been recognised as a finalist in two categories of the 2016 CEO Magazine Executive of the Year Awards.

Adjunct Professor Cornelissen is in the running to be named ‘CEO of the Year’ and ‘Health & Pharmaceuticals Executive of the Year’ when the awards are announced later this year.

“I am humbled to be recognised as a finalist which serves as a testament to Mercy Health’s 7,000 employees who enable us to make a difference in the lives of others every day,” said Adj Prof Cornelissen.

“I am exceedingly proud to be part of an organisation steeped in the history of the Sisters of Mercy that provides compassionate care to those in need while continuing to respond to the current and emerging needs of the communities we serve.”

Mercy Health experienced significant growth during the past two years under the leadership of Adj Prof Cornelissen and his team, particularly in residential aged care.

The organisation successfully expanded its services into far north Queensland and Western Australia where the number of beds grew from 1,200 to over 1,900. The organisation, one of the largest not-for-profit providers in Victoria, also secured $85 million for the expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital to service the fastest growing municipality in Victoria. A particularly pleasing result given the health needs of the community.

“The funding will enable us to build a desperately needed Critical Care Unit for seriously ill patients; significantly expand mental health services and add a further 56 inpatient beds; a new central sterile supply and six operating theatres. These initiatives will save lives,” explained Adj Prof Cornelissen.

“As Mercy Health looks to the future there will be a real emphasis on innovation, including adopting technology, pioneering new research and ensuring we remain a leader in equity and inclusion.”

The CEO Magazine Executive of the Year Awards will be announced in Sydney on 24 November 2016.
