Staff and residents at Mercy Place Mount St. Joseph’s in Young have marked Saint Joseph’s Day with a reflection and discussion.
St. Joseph’s Day is held on 19 March each year and is the principal feast day of St. Joseph – husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Mercy Place Mount St. Joseph marked their namesake’s day early this year on St. Patrick’s Day as part of a double celebration.
Pastoral care worker Patricia Mangelsdorf led the reflection and said it focussed on the nurturing role of St. Joseph towards his wife Mary and foster child Jesus Christ.
“Traditionally we always dedicate the month of March to St. Joseph and his significance to the home and the local Young community,” Ms Mangelsdorf said.
“Our home remains under the protection of St. Joseph and is modelled on his caring and protective nature.”
“This year our residents reminisced about Monsignor Jerome Hennessy who founded St. Mary’s Parish in Young in 1889 and was later responsible for setting up Mercy Place Mount St Joseph’s with the Sisters of Mercy.
“Quite a few of our residents knew Monsignor Hennessy growing up and remember him as being a forward thinking and generous man. They remember him walking the streets asking for food, clothing and goods, and then donating it all to families in need.”
Staff and residents ended the reflection on St. Joseph with a prayer session, which included a special mention for married couples to live in harmony and understanding.
