Forced Adoption Apology Statement from Mercy Health

On behalf of Mercy Health, we offer our sincere apology for the pain and hurt experienced by mothers who attended our Mercy Maternity Hospital from 1970-1985 and were harmed by past adoption practices.

We acknowledge the difficulties that many may have encountered and accept that our care and support may have been less than expected. We deeply regret the heartbreak and suffering that was experienced and acknowledge the lifelong trauma for mothers, adoptees and their families who were involved with us.

Mercy Maternity Hospital in East Melbourne was a registered adoption agency for the period 1970-1985. Mercy Health is committed to assisting, where possible, with access to records from that time, and to engaging in consultations and discussions with mothers, adoptees and families, if they wish to approach us. We welcome your enquiries and will ensure that you receive a compassionate, caring response.
