We recently welcomed Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne MP, John Lister MP, Sarah Connolly MP and Mathew Hilakari MP on a site tour of the Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department expansion.
The visit was a great opportunity to see firsthand the strong progress being made on this important project.
A significant milestone has now been reached, with construction complete on the front and rear canopies. These canopies will provide sheltered, all‑weather access for patients, visitors and staff, while also supporting the safe and efficient movement of emergency services on site. The rear canopy has been designed specifically for ambulance access, keeping emergency vehicles separate from public traffic and removing the need for ambulances to use the main public drop‑off zone.
Construction continues to progress well. More than 820 workers have contributed over 203,844 hours to the project so far, with the expansion on track for completion by mid this year.
Once complete, the expanded emergency department will:
- Double current capacity
- Increase patient treatment spaces from 33 to 67
- Include dedicated areas for paediatrics and adult mental health care
This project forms part of a $280 million investment to boost emergency department capacity across two of Melbourne’s fastest‑growing suburbs, alongside the emergency department expansion at Casey Hospital in Berwick. It is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Mercy Health and builder Besix Watpac.
It’s exciting to see this expansion coming together and the real difference it will make for our community and the teams who care for them every day.
