Scoring goals together

Now in its second season, Mercy Health’s partnership with Western United Football Club reached a high point when the National A-League Championship Trophy was held aloft before a group of excited patients, visitors and staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH).

Mercy Health became the Official Health and Aged Care Partner of the club’s men’s team at the start of the 2021-22 season, which ended triumphantly with the team winning the competition’s champion trophy.

“Our hospital cares for the community and families who are rapidly swelling the membership base of Western United,” says the hospital’s General Manager Maree Pane.

“We are committed to continuing to expand and improve Werribee Mercy Hospital to meet the needs of the growing population in Melbourne’s west.

“We are an integral part of our local community — and what better way to celebrate our community than to get behind this incredible club.”

As the 2022-23 season got underway, Western United’s star goalkeeper Jamie Young brought the A-League trophy into the hospital as part of the club’s trophy tour.

With Jamie, Chief Executive Health Services Professor Jason Payne lifted the trophy as a mark of celebration, recognising the milestone between the two important entities.

Jason says the partnership with the ‘Green and Black’ is a natural fit for two organisations that both exist for the community in the west of Melbourne.

“We are proud of our reputation as a safe pair of hands in healthcare,” Jason says.

“Western United immediately acknowledged that and arranged a specific player partnership with goalkeeper, Jamie Young — a proven safe pair of hands for Western United on the field.”

May 28 2022 will be remembered in the west as a day of triumph. Going head to head with Melbourne City, the Green and Black scored the fastest-ever Grand Final A-League goal and went on to score a 2-nil victory before a packed AAMI Park.

Mercy Perinatal has also become the official Charity Partner of the Western United women’s team, which is competing for the first time in the Liberty A-League competition this season.

Vying for a place in the starting line-up is promising Victorian goalkeeper Alyssa Dall’Oste, who also attended the trophy celebration at WMH. Alyssa previously played with Calder United in the National Premier League Women’s Victoria, where she won the Goalkeeper of the Year award and helped Calder win the championship in 2022.

The women proudly will wear the Mercy Perinatal logo on the back of their playing shorts. Maree says it was exciting to have the trophy on display and to have Jamie and Alyssa onsiteto meet some of their biggest fans.

“Our visitors and staff welcomed the opportunity to have photographs taken, and we wish both the men’s and women’s teams the very best for the season ahead.”

Jamie also acknowledged the personal support from Mercy Health and the support extended to the club as a whole.

“This helps grow and strengthen the community, which supports us on game day.”
