Acknowledging the harm of historical forced adoption

  • Read in Less than a minute

Mercy Health has published a formal apology to mothers, adoptees and families affected by historical adoption practices at Mercy Maternity Hospital in East Melbourne.

We recognise the profound and lasting impact of historical forced adoption practices and the importance of acknowledging the experiences of mothers, adoptees and their families.

Our apology acknowledges the pain, heartbreak and lifelong trauma experienced by those connected with Mercy Maternity Hospital, which was a registered adoption agency from 1970 to 1985.

Mercy Health has also joined the Victorian Government’s Historical Forced Adoptions Redress Scheme, including its Restorative Engagement and Apology Program. Our participation gives eligible mothers the opportunity, if they choose, to engage directly with Mercy Health through a restorative process.

We are committed to approaching these conversations with compassion, sensitivity and respect, and to assisting people seeking access to historical records where possible.
