An avid Richmond supporter, Tony Perugini’s home is decorated with Tigers paraphernalia — premiership posters proudly on display in his lounge room.

“I barrack for the rival Collingwood,” says Mercy Health Home Care Advisor Kathy Black with a smile. “Tony and I often banter about the footy while we share a cup of coffee.”

Although these days he prefers watching sport, Tony led quite the active life in his younger years. He is the former goalkeeper of the Sunshine George Cross soccer team and spent many Sundays dancing up a storm. In fact, that is how he met his late wife, Margaret.

“I first started Irish dancing at the ballroom on top of Flinders Street station,” reflects Tony. “Then one night I met Margaret at a dance hall and I told her ‘I want to marry you’.”

As he recounts that memorable evening, Tony’s colourful personality is on full display.

“He’s definitely a character,” says Kathy. “Tony’s life has been anything but ordinary.”

After World War II, at just 18 years old, Tony left his home country of Malta for Australian shores. He had little education and life experience, but possessed great courage and a strong work ethic.

Once he settled in Melbourne, Tony worked in various jobs before joining the Toyota production line, where he worked for 37 years.

Since retiring, Tony has experienced a number of health problems, including a diabetes diagnosis, peripheral nerve damage and chronic pain from years of manual work.

“When I first met Tony, he had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and he was struggling to understand how to manage it,” says Kathy.

For the past three years, Mercy Health has provided home care services to help make Tony’s health more manageable and keep him living well at home.

Specialist nurse visits initially provided Tony with diabetes education and support, while recent home modifications help keep him safe, comfortable and independent. Tony describes his new step-free shower and handrails around his home as “a great help”.

Kathy and the Mercy Health team also provide practical support for Tony during their weekly visits, assisting him to manage upcoming medical appointments and sort his mail. “They’re in charge of me,” laughs Tony.

Tony’s son Matthew says his father’s Level 3 Home Care Package provides peace of mind.

“Without the amazing assistance of Mercy Health, my sister Lisa and I would have not been able to cope with supporting my father. Kathy and her team provide superb care. It means we focus on the positive moments with dad.”

For Tony, it is the social element of Kathy’s visits that he appreciates the most. “I love talking to everybody. I really enjoy the company.”
