Remembering, together: Frank Waterton’s ANZAC Day

  • Read in 1 minute

For ANZAC Day, remembrance takes many forms — quiet reflection, community gatherings, and the stories carried by those who served.

At Mercy Place Lynbrook, that remembrance is held in the story of Frank Waterton.

Frank, now 99, enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force at just 17. He served as part of the ground crew during World War II, supporting missions by preparing aircraft and equipment, before continuing his service in Japan as part of the occupying forces.

This year, he marked ANZAC Day at home, surrounded by the Mercy Health community and fellow residents, as the local RSL delivered a service onsite — a moment to pause and reflect, not just on his own experience, but on those who did not return.

“ANZAC Day means a great deal to me because it’s a time to stop and remember the people who never came home,” Frank said.

“As the years go by, there are fewer of us left, but you never forget those mates, or the families who gave everything.”

Frank’s story has been shared more widely this week, with coverage from Herald Sun and Channel 7, reflecting a life shaped by service, resilience and enduring connection to community.

His reflections echo the purpose of the day itself — to honour sacrifice, recognise service, and ensure these stories continue to be heard.

At Mercy Place Lynbrook, that commitment is felt in the care and respect shown to Frank each day, and in the quiet moments of remembrance shared across the home.

As Frank puts it:

“When the Last Post plays and the wreath is laid, it brings it all back.”

And in that moment — as across the country — the past is remembered, and the legacy carried forward.
