“You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give." Winston Churchill.

Volunteers are treated as equally and fairly as our paid staff, valued for their input, called upon for their opinions and consulted on matters that substantially affect the performance of their work.

Volunteers must agree to a Police, Working with Children Check and provide the names of referees. The principles of equal employment opportunity do apply. Volunteers will be provided with a position description, agreed working hours, orientation and training, and given access to a Volunteer Handbook with relevant policies and procedures.

For information on volunteering please contact your nearest Mercy Health facility.

Mercy Palliative Care

Mercy Palliative Care volunteers visit patients in their own homes for support, companionship and respite. Volunteers provide their own dimension of care. They are not substitutes for paid staff. Rather, volunteers contribute to a multi-disciplinary team approach aimed at providing the best possible care for patients and their carers/families.

We provide 30 hours of training for Palliative Care volunteers in areas such as:

• What is palliative care

• Volunteer rights and roles

• Patient and carer rights and concerns

• Listening and communication

• Loss and grief

• Spirituality.

Volunteers are provided with a Handbook, which outlines their responsibilities in areas such as confidentiality, gratuities, intruding into family affairs, not giving advice or offering to act as an advocate. It is expected that volunteers will make themselves available for a minimum of three hours per week for a period of at least 12 months. A considerable number of volunteers have been involved with the service for many years.
